TCE Remedial System Construction Oversight and O&M

Orlando SentinelStillwater professionals provided technical support to consent order negotiations with the FDEP in efforts to design a cost-effective and protective groundwater cleanup remedy for dissolved trichloroethene (TCE) contamination in a downtown urban setting. A groundwater flow model of the site was constructed and used to design the recovery well network; specifically, to determine the location and pumping rate for each recovery well. Utilizing the results of the groundwater flow model, the specifications for the groundwater recovery system, the onsite treatment system, and the disposal system were designed. Stillwater professionals were responsible for performing field test to verify the design configuration of well spacing, pumping rate, and number of recovery wells necessary to capture the plumes and also provided construction oversight during remedial system installation. This oversight entailed approximately 5 months of continuous field oversight, including:

  • 4000 feet of horizontal borings and pipe placement;
  • Installation of 10 recovery wells;
  • Installation of 100 gpm air stripper and carbon adsorption system; and
  • Installation of Wonderware process control, monitoring and data telemetry system.
Stillwater is now responsible for providing long-term O&M of the groundwater treatment system. Specific tasks performed by Stillwater include:
  • Routine physical inspection of equipment and piping
  • Replacement of filters
  • Lubrication of rotating equipment
  • Preventative maintenance and inspection
  • Cleaning of equipment
  • Maintenance of extraction wells and piezometers
  • Backwashing of carbon adsorption system
  • Maintenance of data acquisition system and downloading
  • Evaluation of remediation system performance
  • Interpretation and analysis of system operational data
  • Preparation of reports
